Prime Time meetings Sanders draws interest despite still being a CowboyPosted: Monday March 27, 2000 11:59 PM
PALM BEACH, Fla. -- One of the biggest names here at the NFL owners meetings on the east coast of Florida actually is 175 miles away on Florida's west coast -- Deion Sanders. Sanders was wooed by Washington director of football operations Vinny Cerrato on Saturday in Sarasota. The Redskins are easily the hottest team after Sanders, even if they have to wait until November, after Sanders' baseball season is over. Sailing on to other thingsIt's looking more and more like the Jets will hang onto Keyshawn Johnson, barring a blockbuster offer. The two teams most interested -- Baltimore and Tampa Bay -- both have cooled on the All-Pro wide receiver. Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome told me, "With us, the Keyshawn ship has sailed." But Bill Parcells, New York's new director of football operations, arrives in the next 48 hours. The deal could heat up again. Green with envySt. Louis will keep backup quarterback Trent Green, who just had arthroscopic surgery on his reconstructed knee and isn't ready to work out for anyone. That was going to be a prerequisite for any pre-draft deal. Now Green will return to back up Kurt Warner in 2000. Take it or leave itJeff George could be closer to coming back to the Minnesota Vikings for the 2000 season. The Vikings, though, will only offer him a one-year deal in talks with his agent Leigh Steinberg this week. George obviously wants more. Minnesota head coach Dennis Green is committed for Daunte Culpepper, his 1999 rookie, to start Opening Day 2001. Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King covers the NFL and appears regularly on CNN/Sports Illustrated and CNN's NFL Preview.
