Positives: Physically gifted defensive back who can be used at corner or safety. Aggressive, instinctive and flies around the field working to make positive plays. Gives solid downfield coverage, gets outside the numbers to make plays and displays a sense of timing in pass defense. Wraps up when tackling.

Negatives: Struggles making plays with his back to the ball. Lacks top-end speed and does a bit trailing in coverage.

Analysis: Gainey was productive for Appalachian State when on the field and can play at the next level in a system that requires him to face the action.
